The pictures below are of a unit called The Masham Hotel which is in Middlesbrough, part of the Hillstreet Shopping Centre. Hammond Associates have specially negotiated with the landlord for this unit to be occupied as it is a listed building which is attached to the centre. It opened to the public last month.
It is managed and programmed by Navigator North. Navigator North are a Tees Valley based, artist led organisation. In their own words, they “initiate activities to raise the profile of artists and creative practice in the North East, inspiring visual artists and creative communities to thrive.”
Their latest creative endeavour is called ‘Celebrating Hidden Middlesborough’. This programme, beginning in Summer 2021, will uncover heritage stories from the buildings, people, and places in Middlesbrough town centre – drawing inspiration from the Heritage Action Zone.
The aim is to highlight how the buildings, industries, people, and communities have influenced the broader culture of the town over the years, and how that might offer us alternative ways to think about and use the High Street in the 21st Century.
The Masham Hotel
Navigator North’s new creative space – The Masham Hotel on Linthorpe Road, will host the programme and provide opportunities for people to find out more and take part in activities. This will include artist and heritage talks, pop-up events, workshops, and exhibitions.
This building, its architectural interest, and social history will act as a ’Winter Garden’ for Middlesbrough High Street in the 21st Century – creating a programme resource to connect culture, heritage, and communities.
This space will be a key tool to engage with existing audiences in the town centre and will be a safe, informal, welcoming social space for people visiting the High Street. A place for people to share memories, stories, and histories.
