We’ve talked in the past about our friends over at Navigator North in relation to their project ‘Celebrating Hidden Middlesbrough’ which brought attention to the newly occupied Masham Hotel that Hammond Associates specially negotiated with the landlord, and now we’re here to talk about it again!
The Tees Valley based, artist led organisation that is Navigator North began their endeavour in Summer 2021 and have been on a mission uncovering stories from the buildings, people, and places in Middlesbrough’s historic town centre.

Drawing inspiration from the Heritage Action Zone, they have successfully managed to highlight how the buildings, industries, people, and communities have influenced the broader culture of the town over the years and how that might offer us alternative ways to think about and use the High Street in the 21st Century.
Since our last post about them, Navigator North have been hard at work managing events and putting together exciting programmes, and have recently come to us with some wonderful updates that we’d love to share with you too! These include the announcement of an artist for the Zetland Road residency as part of the ‘Celebrating Hidden Middlesbrough’ project as well as fun events in February taking place at the previously mentioned Masham Hotel.
Amy Davies - Zetland Road Artist in Residence
Navigator North have been thrilled to announce Amy Davies as their Zetland Road Artist in Residence for the next 6 months as part of the ‘Celebrating Hidden Middlesbrough’ programme.
Amy is an artist who lives and works in Teesside. Her creative practice is an expanding investigation into the nature of drawing as a means to understand the world around us. Exploring drawing in the widest sense, she predominately works with graphite and paper.

She says: “I feel really excited about the research opportunity this residency will provide. My own practice has much to do with language, experience, trying to put an image to a sense of embodiment, disease, joy or distress. I’m fascinated to be working with the stories, words and spaces of other people; past and present.”
To follow Amy’s work and progress with the residency you can follow @zetlandroadresident on Instagram.
What's On in February At The Masham?
The Masham hosts numerous exhibitions, workshops and all-round creative events, inviting people in to admire or even take part in the activities on offer.
One upcoming event happening at The Masham comes in the form of a natural dye introductory workshop which takes place on Saturday 26th Feb between 12pm and 4pm.
As the poster says, the aim is to try and achieve the perfect ‘Middlesborough red’ shade to be used for a public piece of art.
All ages are welcome and so are old t-shirts if you fancy revamping them with some natural dye! So why not have a root through your clothes drawers for some forgotten garments and bring them along with you for a bit of fun and creativity?
