Wester Hailes Carnival Showcase: Health, Joy, and Healing

Earlier this month, the streets of Wester Hailes were transformed into vibrant stages and walkways filled with stalls, artistic performances, and lots of enthralled spectators all gathered to join in with the festivities happening at Wester Hailes Carnival Showcase.

The colourful community celebration of Wester Hailes Carnival was led by Edinburgh Art Festival in collaboration with the Community Wellbeing Collective (CWC), Edinburgh Festival Carnival, and SCOREscotland. Among the groups participating were the MACS Intercultural After-school Club led by artist Khadea Santi and CWC members Sindy Santos & Heather Marufu, as well as SCOREscotland Young People led by Khadea and CWC members Cheri Caraballo, Kiesha Lancaster and Chantal Auguste who offered carnival-inspired workshops to anyone wishing to get involved.

Throughout the day, performances from poets such as Courtney Stoddart took place along with the Edinburgh Festival Carnival samba procession, DJ Rawzi, and band Samba Sene & Diwan.

A variety of stalls were present, including Afro-hair styling, badge making, language exchange and affirmations, as well as a stall for the Wester Hailes Community Trust, Wester Hailes Library, CWC members, and SCOREscotland. Some of the younger guests visiting the carnival were also treated to fun and games by local kids’ arts and creativity group, Starcatchers!

There was so much going on we at Hammond Associates thought it best to showcase a few fantastic photos that captured the incredible energy from the day. Take a look below!
